MINISTERS TO ENSURE QUALITY OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson will tomorrow discuss with his interstate colleagues ways to guarantee international students have a positive experience in Australia.
Mr Wilson said he would work to safeguard the quality of international education at the Ministerial Council for Tertiary Education and Employment (MCTEE) meeting in Melbourne.
"The Queensland Government values the cultural, social and economic contribution international students make to our state," Mr Wilson said.
"We are working with all Australian governments to ensure international students are enjoying a safe and positive experience here and that our reputation for quality education and training is maintained.
"The Queensland Government supports national strategies including the Baird Review of the
Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS)
Act that will tighten registration requirements and further protect students and their families from fraudulent operators.
"We support the Council of Australian Governments' development of the International Student Strategy for Australia which will enhance the student experience through initiatives to improve student wellbeing, quality of education, consumer protection and better information provision."
Mr Wilson said the State Government had taken a number of steps to maintain high educational standards and student safety and wellbeing in Queensland.
"The Department of Education and Training continues to audit education and training providers to ensure their courses meet student and industry requirements.
"Queensland's International Student Accommodation Taskforce has reviewed the State's regulations on 'rooming-style' accommodation, compliance with regulations and international students' information needs.
"Last year the Government established the Queensland Education and Training International Student Experience Reference Group which offers guidance to the State Government on projects to enhance the student experience.
"We are determined to deliver the best possible education outcomes in a peaceful, safe and friendly environment.
"The Queensland Police Service, through specialist officers and units, conducts personal safety information sessions at universities, TAFEs and other education providers, and works with diverse community groups to improve the safety of all people in Queensland, including overseas students and visitors."
MCTEE meets at least twice a year to consider matters in its areas of responsibility.
