THE Insurance Council of Australia is reminding Ipswich motorists to guard their car keys, with new statistics revealing vehicle thefts have risen for the first time in a decade.
Figures released by the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council found 57,540 vehicles were stolen in 2011, an increase of 2.4% on the number of thefts in 2010.
ICA policy, risk and disaster planning general manager Karl Sullivan said some thieves were turning to the theft of keys and transponders to steal cars.
"Motorists should ensure they keep their keys secure," he said.
