Queensland election: Newman congratulates Palaszczuk

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's career
 in politics is over after losing his seat of Ashgrove. 
OUTGOING Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has called Annastacia Palaszczuk to congratulate her on the Labor party's success in Saturday's state election.

LABOR is poised to return to government just one term after the Liberal National Party crushed it in 2012. 

The ALP on Saturday won at least 43 of the 45 seats it needs to form government in its own right.Mr Newman, who lost his own seat of Ashgrove to former Labor minister Kate Jones, on Saturday night declared his political career over.

But he will remain as premier until the poll is finalised.

"Today I phoned @AnnastaciaMP to congratulate her on her candidates' success. I'll continue as caretaker until the result is known #qldpols," Mr Newman tweeted on Sunday.

The Queensland Electoral Commission is continuing the vote count.

Mr Newman is not expected to make a public appearance on Sunday.
